FAQ Scottie Go!

1. About Scottie Go!

Scottie Go! is an innovative hybrid educational game that makes learning fun by combining both the virtual and real-life space. The game is made up of two components – an application and a set of cardboard tiles used to build programs which can then be scanned with your mobile device or a webcam. Designed for both youngest and older players, Scottie Go! features nearly a hundred of quests of increased difficulty that let you design simple and more complex algorithms while learning the fundamentals of programming along the way.

Scottie Go! is available in two versions: an education version (for school and education institutions) and a home version. You can distinguish the version by the inscription located in the top corner of the game box.

Scottie Go! Adventures Labyrinth (the Adventures series) is intended for use at home.

Scottie Go! – the plot

The aim of the game is to assist a friendly alien called Scottie, whose spaceship malfunctioned and crash-landed on Earth (or in the Scottie Go! Adventures series somewhere else in space). By programming Scottie’s moves, you can help him collect the missing parts for his spaceship or crystals fueling the vessel, that enable Scottie to return home.

More about other versions of Scottie Go!:

Scottie Go! Magnetic Tiles

Scottie Go! Magnetic Tiles can help teachers to present the fundamentals of programming to their pupils. The kit features 47 large, magnetic tiles that can be used to illustrate the basics of algorithm building, the notions of a parameter, a loop and/or nested loops. The tiles allow you to construct solutions for the first 24 quests for Scottie Go! Edu. Scottie Go! Magnetic Tiles is compatible with the Scottie Go! App.

Scottie Go! BASIC

Scottie’s adventures for the youngest programmers. A board game to teach and learn programming for kids as young as 4 allows them to code with no need to use either a mobile device or a computer. Scottie Go! BASIC features enlarged tiles, special tokens, challenge cards and counters. It allows the players and a teacher to create their own gameplay, improve teamwork skills and use algorithms along the way. Scottie Go! BASIC might be used to encourage pupils to move in the classroom and be creative. It was developed in cooperation with teachers specialising in early and pre-school education. Scottie Go! BASIC can be used both with the ScottieGo! Edu App or without it.

License

Without entering your licence number, the game app remains a trial version. This means you will be able to use it for 3 days and solve the first 4 quests in the first module.

You will find the licence number for your app on a separate sheet of paper inside the Scottie Go! box.

To enter the licence code, just run the app or tap the button with a key inside the app.

Do I need to have Internet access to use the app with Scottie Go! tiles?

The app runs in an offline mode. Internet access is required only during installation and when activating the licence code.

5. Camera and scanning programs

What should I do if, while trying to scan the tiles, the app fails to recognise the tiles or recognises only some of the tiles?

There are two scanning modes in the app:

1. Video-camera (top right-hand corner of the screen in the scanning mode). It’s the default mode for scanning and recording tiles, but you can switch between modes any time to improve the scanning results.

2. Still-camera

In video-camera mode just scroll your device over the tiles you want to scan, not too high, and then check the accuracy of the recorded tiles.

Additional tips:

• You can try moving your device up and down, which will help the camera to focus.

• Make sure the room where the scanning takes place is well lit.

• Always use the primary camera on your device. It has the best quality and it’s usually the back-facing camera.

• The board on which you can assemble the tiles has two sides - white and grey. Make sure you use the white side in poor lighting conditions, whereas in extremely well-lit spaces use the grey side.

• Make sure there is always enough memory space on your device for the Scottie Go! app to function properly!

In case of Android devices: if the app can recognise only some tiles while scanning, make sure you calibrate your camera. In order to do that choose”Settings” from the Main Menu, then choose ”Calibrate camera” and follow the on-screen prompts.

What should I do if, while scanning the program, the camera fails to cover all the tiles on the game board?

As you progress in the game, the level of difficulty increases along with the number of tiles that should be used to complete quests, so it’s important to switch to video-camera mode when scanning the program. Make sure you intuitively try to move the camera field of view over the assembled tiles until they all appear on the screen. When finished, scroll the program on the screen and then run it on your device.

When completing the final quests in the game that require using functions, make sure you start with building and scanning functions (A, B, C) and then build, scan and run the program in which those functions are called. In one quest you can have the maximum of three functions and one program that utilises them.

How can I play the game on a desktop or laptop computer?

• You need to attach a webcam with autofocus and minimum 2 Mpix resolution. You also need Windows 7 operating system or higher.

• The types and configuration of the webcams differ a lot, so we recommend testing the device before the purchase.

• Due to the quality of graphics cards, older computers may experience problems with webcams. Solving a problem like this may require separate tests that are performed on the user’s computer remotely with the user’s consent.

• An ideal solution is to use computers with detachable screen, the so called 2 in 1.

• We do not recommend using the built-in laptop camera as it requires turning the device which makes it hard to see if the program has been scanned correctly.

The app fails to recognise the camera or the screen gets black?

Older devices may not support the new game update, so we prepared older versions of the game and drivers available for download under the links below:

HOME version for Windows 1.1.6 b.

https://owncloud.man.poznan.pl/index.php/s/udqmEKq6LdT60kA

What should I do if the app displays a warning that the scanned tiles belong to the version of the game that is not suitable for the app I use?

• Scan the program again or restart the app. If nothing else works, re-install the app. Make sure you choose the correct version: the Scottie Go! App in case of the home version; Scottie Go! Edu in case of the education version, Scottie Go! Adventures: Labyrinth app in case of Scottie Go! Adventures: Labyrinth.

• Make sure the reverse side of the tile contains a correct description or if there is no description at all. In the education version there is the word ”EDU” on the reverse side of each tile.

• Make sure you are not scanning some tiles that might be scattered on the game board within the camera field of view and that do not belong to the scanned program.

6. How to use the Scottie Go! kit?

What is the player’s minimum age?

Thanks to graphics and description-based communication, Scottie Go! can be played both by children who can already read and those who can’t read yet. Even a 4-5 year old player can recognise short commands such as begin, turn to the left etc.

The youngest players should play the first quests with the support of an adult person. Scottie Go! BASIC is the version of the game that is ideally suited for kids as young as four.

Scottie Go! Edu is an ideal choice for elementary school students.

What is the recommended number of players for the game?

The game can be played individually or in teams - we recommend two players per one kit. In this way the game will facilitate not only algorithmic and programming competences but also communication between players related to cooperation.

What is the optimal number of mobile devices to scan programs?

The optimal number of devices to scan the tiles depends on where and how the game is used.

At home: one device (tablet computer, a smartphone or a computer with a webcam)

At school: at least one device per one class (min. 5/10 game kits) with paper work charts/progress charts and guidelines for teachers available for download at http://scottiego.obok.com.pl/en/education

Media centres, community centres, libraries, individual classes, etc.: one device per each game kit.

At school the one device per class model allows your students to work in teams. The teacher displays game objectives or other tips on the wall or interactive whiteboard using a multimedia projector. Pupils participating in the lesson can read the in-game instructions, build their programs using tiles from their game kits and then check their solution using the device and work cards provided by their teacher. You can find a detailed description of this work model at www.scottiego.com/education in the Education/Materials tab.
